Understanding LEED projects:
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System® is a certification program that encourages environmentally responsible construction and renovation. Along with this certification program is a rating system that builders are graded on to determine how environmentally sound their construction project is.

The LEED Green Building Rating System has waste removal, recycling and environmental impact criteria that we can help with. Our LEED system provides waste breakdown and diversion statistics to improve your rating.

Waste Diversion for C&D
The chart below represents the typical composition of C&D waste according to Stats Canada. A large portion of the items found in construction and demolition waste is recyclable and can be diverted from our landfills. With partnerships across Alberta, we recycle up to 85% of C&D waste including drywall, asphalt shingles, concrete, wood, paper, etc..
Industry itself has been the driving force toward environmentally sound construction projects but their progress has always been spurred by the ongoing threat of various types of environmental legislation. Currently there are a couple pending programs that the construction industry is watching and ahead of the curve on.
According to the government of Alberta:
A memorandum of understanding was executed between Alberta Environment, the Alberta Construction Association and the Canadian Home Builders Association to work together and develop a provincial wide C&D waste program intended to reduce the amount of waste ending up in our landfills.
In March/April 2009 that working group held several focus groups with the construction industry and companies like ours. That feedback is being used to revise the proposal and the final stages are now taking place.

Most of our customers are industry leaders that stay ahead of the curve with respect to pending legislation but we keep a close eye on regulations that can effect our customers. We all understand what needs to be done and Smart-Way Disposal and Recycling Company has the tools and systems to help.
